I know some hera have run TDs without the rear muffler w/ not much noise, but I
tried it after the muffler broke off and I put a straight pipe on. It was very
objectionable and actually hurt my ears at cruising speed. So I went to VW and
bought the muffler (its actually the entire pipes and muffler from the
resonater back) for about $120 (I got it wholesale since I worked there years
ago). Several years before thast I checked the price of that same (TD) muffler
at VW and it was well over $300! I guess they are reasonable on a very few items
that can be bought elsewher. Heck, I just bought a clutch kit from them for $108
(rebuilt PP, clutch disc, pressure plate metal disc the push rod presses on, and
its spring). I was a little skeptical it said "Hecho en Mexico", and only the
disc said "Sachs", but its smooth as silk!
