[Vwdiesel] new engine running rough, why?

  My first suspicion would be that the timing is a bit retarded, like the
cold
start knob was part way out when the timing was set.  Other than that it's
be as you suspect.  A bad glow plug, they can fail quickly some times.  An
injector that's shooting slightly bad could be the culprit as well.  It has
more
of an effect, the colder the weather and engine is.  Of course this is the
case
with all 3 possibilities.
