[Vwdiesel] TDI CV joint

Here's another fiasco I experienced w/ an '86 Corolla my wife had. Replaced the
CV joint boots. Left axle like any other, except the outter joint (inner part)
is WELED to the axle, so all the stuff slides off the tranny end after the inner
joint is knocked off. Went fine. Right axle, inner boot went fine BUT the outter
boot can't slide up the axle, because its much larger in diameter (and hollow)
than the boot! (just like VW axles). Consulting the Toyota service manual, for
replacing the right outter boot said to, "Replace drive axle". WTF. I visited
the dealer. They said in 1987, or 88, they made it differently so this did not
have to be done. For '86, at the factory, on the right axle, the boot was put
on, then the inner part of the joint welded to the axle!!!! Guess what I did. I
cut the old boot off and put one of those split "speedi boots" on. Before I
swore I'd never do that. AND it was still on there 6 years later when we sold
the car!
