My experience agrees with everything Sandy said. I would just emphasize the
compression concerns. I have run these engines until they would almost run
no more. I had a jetta 1.6 D that would run great, used little oil, used
little fuel, pushed the car down the road reasonably quickly, but would not
start by the starter  (starters).   It had broken the top piston ring on all
4 pistons. As was said here recently; if the basics are good, they start.
