Those front axle nuts? The shop that pressed my front
beqrings 8 years ago said they had to be torqued to
spec or the bearing would quickly fail. I guess so
since that nut clamps the bearing halves together! All
I've ever had to use was my 2 ft. 1/2 inch drive
breaker bar and a little bounce on it w/ both feet to
get it loose. (Noe those 36 MM rear axle nuts on
Beetles are another matter. I broke a few Craftsman
breaker bars on those using a pipe cheater!) I've had
to cold chissel those off too.

I think torque spec is about 170 ft-lbs for the drive
shaft nuts, so I just stand on the breaker bar about 1
foot from the socket, w/ the breaker bar handle
parallel to the ground.

The axle nuts are deformed (crimped) to get them to
stay tight. Why they say to replace them each time I
don't know. Half the time CV boot kits do not come
with them.
