[Vwdiesel] not starting...leaking fuel from somewhere

We tried to get the rabbit going today. We towed it behind my father's truc=
k for a few trips around the block. No joy!!!! When we got back, I noticed=
fuel leaking from somewhere. It was all over the front of the block.
If I have a bad injector seal, could that prevent engine startup? Too much=
compression loss? What is involved with fixing that?
Thanks

Yep, it's called "cylindrical retaining compound" and we use it at work as
well. I don't remember the part number, either.
Works better if you use primer with it, I can't remember if it's Primer N
or Primer T. I think either will work but one has a longer shelf life after
application.

Lee,

Thanks,
The problem is;
You go to the webpage, put in your email addr and password---no problem so
far.
You get an email back right away saying to confirm your subscription---no
problem.
You THEN get an error email back from the mailer-daemon @ vwfans.com
The reason (AFAICT) is that when you reply to vwdiesel-request at vwfans.com
(like you're instructed to) it won't work.
Someone suggested to me (sorry, I forget who, to give you proper credit) to
reply to vwdiesel-request at audifans.com
and, voila! it worked perfectly. Nobody would think to do this, so I am
surprised you would have ANY new members at all, since whenever this has
been happening ! !

The only reason I was able to sign up, is I went searching through the
archives, emailed a dozen of you and some kind soul replied with this
method.
Emails to dans at whatever went unanswered !

How many other folks have wanted to sign up but got frustrated (rightly so)
because their subscription got denied, through some glitch which is so
easily fixed with 30seconds of changing "vwfans.com" to "audifans.com" (both
on the site and the return email the automatic mailer robot sends you)

Thanks,

Mike ve9aa, yes I am a HAM operator, hi hi! 73

Haha, that was me.

ARGGHHH!!! We have had this problem for over a year! I complained about it
as far back as June 4, 2002. Time to light a fire under Dan.......
I'd HATE to see this list die a slow death of attrition, there are too many
colorful characters here! While the older diesels are slowly beginning to
wear out and rust out, there is a new crop of dieselheads coming up with the
TDIs. I know many of us on the list have "dual citizenship", myself
included.
Hagar, I think you are a recent addition. Did you have any problems signing
up?

Dan! Are you listening?

Hi Guys,

I just bought an 88 Jetta Turbo diesel. 1.6L . No idea how many valves.
How can I tell if the "turbo" part is working? I know little to nothing abo=
ut diesels and less about testing the turbo.
Some of the guys at work seem to think I should hear it whining and claim i=
t turns VERRRY fast ! (30k RPM some said,hmmm)

The car seems gutless (maybe it should seem that way, LOL) Less power than =
my old 1989 Ford Escort 1.9L station wagon.

Any quick and easy way to tell?

Thanks

Buy an inexpensive vacuum/pressure guage (I got one
for about $15). Tee it into the boost enrichment
duaphram line(Little hose from the intake manifold to
injection pump. Place the guage where you can close
the hood w/ out pinching the hose and where you can
see the guage. Go for a drive. Load the engine by
going up a hill at full throttle. Run the engine out
to about 3000 RPMS. At about 2,000 RPMs boost begins
to build. You should get a reading of 9 - 10 PSI at
about 2,500 - 2,800 RPMs under full load. Some turbos
are audible, some are whisper quite.

Thanks Nate,

So, it's a "pressure" I'm looking for in this line, right? (PSI) I can
probably borrow a guage from work, as I work in the BioMed/Clinical
Engineering Dept of a Hospital and we have various instruments for measuring
PSI and mmHg (mm of mercury) etc.

What kind of boost in HP does a turbo add to my lil' diesel lump? 10HP?
15HP?
What should the overall HP be for a 1.6L diesel? Seems really gutless.
I'm sure it won't leave me stranded going up hills or anything, but I'm not
used to it being so "flat" over its entire RPM range.
Acceleration is quite slow. Worse than my 89 Escort 1.9L gas.

So many questions.......ha h a LOL!!

Mike it was I who solved your problem. Those of us that have been on the
list for some time discovered the problem when we migrated from vwfans to
audifans. Don't know why the list manager hasn't fixed the problem. Your
right though, how many people have tried to sign up but become frustrated
