When I swapped the new engine into the car, it required that I change out t=
he arm attached to the top of the injection pump. this arm is the one contr=
olled by the accelerator pedal/cable. I was very cautious not to allow the=
mounting post turn and to mount the arm at the same position, but even thi=
s was very difficult. hypothetically speaking though, had that mounting pos=
t turned when no arm was attached, how could I know where is the correct po=
sition to reattach the arm? Would it have to go to an injection pump shop a=
nd get "tuned?" mikey

Mike & Coreen,
You've gotta give it a tweek...you can always back things off again when
done....Do I look/sound like a money-spending speed freak?...I'm all for
ecnonomy, and efficiency!
The only time I want xs of power in my TD; is when I need it ...ie up a hil=
l,
or more importantly when overtaking that smelly lorry.
What I altered was the diaphragm rotation...(I actually backed it off from
standard position).I also adjusted the spring tension on the same. To delay
slightly the extra fueling relative to start of turbo spool-up...in an effo=
rt
to create a 'leaner' mixture. Too far and you move like a slug...and
conversely there's enough + available to have a Delorean like in 'Back to t=
he
Future'
Note the point made by Loren..."I gained almost as much again [mpg] when I
turned
up the fuel delivery. I attributed it to spending less time at full
"throttle"
(yeah, our little lever isn't technically a throttle) when accelerating.
Even
though you are capable of using more fuel, you use it for less time."....
There is nothing worse [Safety/Embarrassing-wise] than pulling out to pass
that old fogey in front, whose earnt the right to call Hagar 'laddie'...and
finding youre the menace on the highway!

Yes, this o-ring can be replaced, but you have to pull the aneroid
assy(not just the aneroid cover) off of the pump to do it.

I want to turn my max fuel screw down (ccw) to limit smoke from my n/a. Do I
have to pop the crimped collar off the screw to do this? It seems as if this
shouldn't matter, but I tried turning the screw yesterday and it wouldn't b=
udge.

Turning the screw out shouldn't be a problem. That collar only keeps one
from screwing it IN too far. However, there is a locknut on the screw
next to the pump body that needs to be loosened.

Torque vs HP:
Put very simply, torque is, as said a measure of the amount of "push"
the pistons exert at a given moment. HP is a combination of torque
plus rotating mass. Raise the rpm, raise the hp on the same engine,
with no changes. Put on a heavier flywheel and you stand a good
chance of raising the hp rating as well. ;-)
(this is a new html command...)
Actually, torque would be the amount of twist at the wheel, after the
up-and-down movements have been converted to circular ones... there is loss
in the conversion (a picky/trivial difference).
However, horsepower is a function of torque x rpm (I think you multiply the
two and divide by 88000 or some other arbitrary number based on the number
of days until the next full moon). That's why those puny little F1 engines
produce so much power. That's also why our "puny" 68hp diesel pulls so well
at low speeds -- the low speed torque is much more than a "higher
horsepower" gas engine produces, so at a given low speed we actually put out
quite a bit more horsepower than the gas counterpart. However, because we
don't rev as high, the actual "maximum horsepower" developed is considerably
lower. Over a range of, say 1000-3000 rpm a diesel may produce (say) 50%
more torque, so OVER THAT RANGE we would be producing maybe 50% more
horsepower. But since the gas could rev to (say) 6000rpm, altho producing
less torque over the entire range, it would have a higher "maximum
horsepower".
just my $0.02Cdn...

HP =3D Torque x rpm / 5252 (using typical US-SAE measurements.
The divisor constant changes with input units.)
