<<<The test Nate did without a wastegate makes it seem
like running without it isn't a problem, any ideas?
Until you hit a big hill with 4 people in the car on a
hot day. Then you have no idea what it might go to.
Do you think maybe his car is under-fueled?
Depends on your definition of under fueled. For him
it's probably got plenty of fuel. He drives it pretty
easy. For average driver conditions it probably has
plenty as well. >>>
I'm beginning to think my Jetta TD is underfueled
under boost conditions, and this in fact, is limiting
the boost I produce. More fuel might make the
wastegate necessary with the uneducated (average
person) driving it. I now find myself driving about 70
MPH sometimes and feel I'm getting a little impatient
w/ older age. Also, w/ the new motor, I do not mind
pushing it a little. I feel that it is set perfectly
for optimal fuel effeciency, though. The best way I
can describe the turbo acceleration is "A gentle push
that gradually increases w/ increasing speed", not a
"seat of the pants" kind of thing. I also dump no
black smoke, unless its over 4,000 RPMs, so the
diaphram must be set to supply fuel only in the upper
RPM range. I figure if I mess with it, it may become
very uneconomical to drive and engine life may
shorten. Years ago before I messed w/ the setting, I
could obliterate headlights behind me w/ black smoke,
but I also had old injectors and never set the timing.
Yesterday I had four people in the car w/ about 300
pounds of top soil in the trunk. I was about 50 lbs
over the max vehicle weight rating. It was also about
75 degrees out. Acceleration was decent, but at about
70 MPH, power dropped to nothing and I doubt it would
have done over 80 MPH like that. Low fueling, I
believe. I figure I could get alot more out of it by
adjusting the aneroid, but I'm still pretty happy w/
the economy and power w/ just me in it. If it a'int
broke, don't fix it.
I do notice a fair more power and better acceleration
in cooler weather. At 80 - 90 degrees outside, its a
real slow dog. At 50 degrees out, it really moves!
This must be "natures intercooler" at work!
I think after work today I'll put the pressure guage
on the Jetta and see what I'm getting w/ the new
motor. I'm still debating putting the new turbo on it
I have sitting on my office shelf.
