re: 1988 Jetta 1.6L turbo diesel, "Turbo Saga" ............
Ok, per many of your instructions and special thanks to Loren, I braved t=
he elements here tonight and took the top off my aneroid, to find the whole=
top of the black rubber diaphragm covered with oil. I would estimate abou=
t an ounce as it slopped all over the place when I took the cover off. It=
was only +3.7C and 7pm local (overcast) so a litle cool & dark to be worki=
ng on the car, but I cleaned it up, blew the at least partially plugged no=
zzle out with my air compressor and stuck it back on. Driving hard up the =
road I (maybe)noticed a slight change, with a very very small puff of black=
smoke when nearing redline and stamping on the throttle. I then increased=
the turning of the max fuel mixture screw from my current 1/8th turn in, t=
o a full 1/4 turn in and went up the road again. The only change noticed t=
his time is that the car idled close to 1800/1900 RPM. I backed it off to =
my original 1/8th turn in so it idles around 1000/1100rpm, like it always d=
id. (seems high to me, but much below that and the alternator light comes o=
n=2E)
I thought "possibly" I heard a slight very high pitched spin from the turbo=
under load, but it might be wishful thinking on my part.
Perhaps tomorrow, if it's not raining I may take the diaphragm off and see =
what all this "turning" the cone or whatever is about.
I'll have to re-read what Loren and others have said about turning in/out a=
nd wear marks again as I'm not entirely clear on this washer with a stamp a=
nd all that just yet.(I didn't see any washer). I didn't get a real good =
look UNDER the diaphragm but it looked to be quite clean, with no oil havin=
g escaped down underneath (that I could see in the failing daylight)
There was also some kind of long bent clip/spring, jammed up against a gear=
at the 8 o'clock position. I tried prying very gently on it with a long s=
credriver, but it didn't budge. Is it supposed to be there?
The diaphragm seemed to move up/down without binding, but it wasn't "loose"=
or overly "easy" to push down. I suspect this is the proper operation of t=
he spring or whatever. When I put the top on the aneroid I estimate it pus=
hed the whole diaphragm down 1/8th+ inches.
