  I think I've only ever seen one, non Quattro, post 83 5000 that WASN'T an
automatic.
  Usually the really leaky steering comes from never changing the fluid or
actually doing that, or adding a little and using the wrong fluid.  :(   So
long as the wrong fluid wasn't used, or it was caught early, you can just
do a rebuilt rack and be fine with the pump and all.
