  It used to be that way, but it isn't any more. Fuel taxes are paid at the
pump just like gasoline, but taxed fuel has no dye added to it. That way, if
the DOT pulls a sample from your tank and it has color, they know you've
been using untaxed fuel.

 Inspections seem to be as much about safety as revenue generation to some
garages. It pays to develop a relationship with your favorite inspection
station......
