  Woo hoo!  I finally found a part number!  That's a fast (6 second)
relay, 80 through 84 4000, 5000, D, G, R and J, in variations.  This
number also comes up.  171 911 261 A

  That looks like a Bosch number but the bosch number should be a 0 333
etc.  A slow relay lists as a VW number of 321 911 261C.  Any chance of
another number?  As Roger said, you could check the on time of it.

  Slow relay with fast plugs will burn out the plugs over time.  Probably
a fairly short time.  Fast relay on slow plugs will result in slow, smoky
starts unless you cycle the plugs more than once, depending on the
temp.
