I guess I should say that the manifold guages give a
general indication of the actual refrigerant charge
(volume or weight), since the level in the system is
related to the pressure generated, which is also
relative to the outside humidity and temperature.
Loren is correct, the guages can tell you a whole host
of things about your A/C system's functioning. BTW,
the R-134A and the R-12 guage sets have different
couplers and can only be used with their respective
refrigerants.
