Probably because bottoming taps are hardly ever stocked by suppliers in any
great number, just taper and plug. That and bottoming taps break soooooo
easy due to the end loading when someone runs one through before running a
taper then a plug tap first. Local guys hardly ever have bottoming taps in
stock. I keep mine well hidden so nobody grabs one by mistake, cause if you
can get it started in a fresh hole, it just breaks. reminds me of when Dad
asked me where I got the really crummy drills from. He said they just
shattered like glass. He was hand drilling 3/8" holes into some crappy
tractor cab iron with a cordless drill. Solid carbide drills will do
that... They stay hidden with the bottoming taps now too. expensive holes
to mount a radio bracket.
