Hey Guys ... I have enjoyed reading your reflections and musings on what is=
one of my favorite subjects and pastimes ... driving and tweaking my VW Ra=
bbit Diesel and generally keeping it alive and running well. I am astounded=
that the vehicle I characterized as a "little tin box" when a friend, who =
had bought one new in '81, suggested I take my 4600 pound, gas guzzling bal=
listic missile (Plymouth Fury Hi-Performance Mopar 360 Station Wagon at 8 t=
o 12 mpg on a good day), in and trade it for a Rabbit. At the time gas was =
still fairly cheap and I protested "You'll never find me driving one of tho=
se little toys".
Then a very few years ago I was commuting 100+ miles a day at $400+ a month=
in gas. Needing a second vehicle anyways for the family while I was workin=
g 10s and 7ns, on the way to work there was an '84 Rabbit at 200k miles and=
although the $1200 asking price was a bit high it ran sweet and it's $40 a=
month in gas was very attractive especially when the fuel savings would pa=
y for the "little box" in under 4 months.
Anyhows ... It is amazing how some things can grow on you if you just give =
it some time ... good scotch .... fly fishing from a canoe ... the occasion=
al worthy companion of the feminine persuasion ... and this damn little box=
of a toy that has grown on me.
Outside of normal maintenance, a head gasket (piece of cake compared to som=
e I've done), struts and brake pads ... the damn thing "takes a beating and=
keeps on ticking". Treats me better than most human beings have ... even c=
onsidering the few "worthy" female companions.
Eh ... I digress from the reason I started writing in the first place.
On this archives page ... http://www.audifans.com/pipermail/vwdiesel/ ... w=
henever I try the "download the full raw archive" link I get "The page cann=
ot be displayed" with "mhtml:http://www.audifans.com/pipermail/vwdiesel.mbo=
x/vwdiesel.mbox" in the address bar. I'd love to download all the sage advi=
ce that is referred to in the many current messages as being in the archive=
s ... but I am having this problem of "The page cannot be displayed". Can s=
omebody advise me or get to the admin of that page to correct the problem p=
lease?
Thanks ...
Bill

"When the people fear the government, you have tyranny. When the government=
fears the people, you have freedom."
Thomas Paine, ... he should know having been a revolutionary during a few r=
evolutions in government, including ours, (the U.S.A.), by far the most rel=
evant and meaningful in human history.
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason f=
or the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resor=
t, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"
Thomas Jefferson, June 1776 ... If ya don't know who he is then perhaps it =
is because of some tyranny where you live finds advantage in hiding his exi=
stence from you. (Oh perish the revolutionary thought of the ability to pro=
tect freedom from tyranny !!!)
