Hi Guys:
On a TD I replaced the valve guides and guide seals
and lapped the valves (they were in great shape, along
w/ the seats after 200,000 miles). The guides were
VERY worn, though. Toatal cost, about $35!!!! The
machine shop quoted me over $400 for a head job.
Tools needed are:
1. Valve spring compressor (I have the Schley head on
the car compressor that has the bar you screw onto the
cam studs and the depressor that hooks onto the bar on
one end. (about $150?)
2. Valve guide seal removal pliers (Schley, about
$40?) (I bet something else could be used).
3. 8 MM valve guide installation (stepped) drift. This
keeps the guide from mushrooming upon installation.
Schley again, about $16.
4. Valve guide seal installation drift (Schley, about
$18). There again, something else may work.
That's it. I did one valve at a time. I drove out the
old guides w/ a carpenter's (claw) hammer and a 1/4
inch drive socket on a nut driver extension. THEY ARE
TIGHT! I did not ream the new guides and I hand lapped
the valves. The valve adjustment stayed the same too!
Ran great afterwards!
--Nate, checking in during my job search. I just can't
leave this list alone!
