I drove a 1982 1.6L NA Rabbit from 25 Dec 1997 to 17 June 2003 =
smoking like stack and gutless.

Please read my thread "My Rabbit smokes no more ,no more etc. -." (17 june=
2003.) The joy of accomplishment is considerable. Nothing to buy or sen=
d out for repairs. I asked the grand wizards to explain why just adding=
ESSO AD-100 to fuel would make that much of a difference. Before they answ=
ered I found the reason. It was non functioning timing system inside pump.=
My favorite way to solve problems is Boolean logic. So now newbies can do i=
t in short order simply by following the same procedure.
Somewhere I mentioned that the procedure assumes that you checked Valves,in=
jectors, and did all the other checks. But it still smokes and lack power. =
The basic idea has to do with the internals of the pumps.Just like compres=
sion slowly decreases over time so does some of the functions of the pumps.=
So to compensate we tune for end results i.e. performance ,rather than to=
absolute settings. There are many things we can adjust on the pump accordi=
ng to how badly worn the individual pump is. For example , we can lower th=
e cracking pressure on the injectors. We can increase the flow from the reg=
ulator valve , we can reduce the spring pressure on the timing piston. =
                                  Hagar.
