Is there a less expensive way to build a nozzle tester 
using leftover hydraulic parts for pressure and the 3000PSI 
gage from a welding regulator?

A:  YES.        I used a standard grease-gun (10 000 psi) and 1/8 pipe-fitting
and a 3000 psi oxygen  gauge.    worked like likety split .   At times I use
a 10 000 Psi gauge .  LOL   ..at that pressure even grease comes out as a
mist.                              Hagar.

PS:  One turn on barrel  =  50 thou   more or less.   According to Bentley
VRD4    an increase in shim of o.o5 mm increases the pressure about 5 bar.
(71 psi)       50 thou = 1.27 mm     so   50 thou works out to about 1803 psi.
please check me on this. ---- Like I said I shall confirm on testrig. 

My experience with spray patterns ? -- do not let looks of nozzle fool you.
Next time I go all new nozzles.Way easier to adjust.
Understand that I am not promoting this a a better way to do things , like
the Blotter test and other procedures I mention --it is aimed at the temporarily
down on their luck of us who would rather spend the money on shoes for the kids.
Than on the endless list of "special" tools being flogged on us.
