Nonsense. I run 15w50 Mobil 1 in all our vehicles here in central WI. When I
lived in far norther MN a couple years ago I was using 5w50, but frankly, I
can't see much difference. Of course the coldest it's gotten here is -10F and it
gets -20 or -25F up there, but I haven't experienced any problems cranking and I
don't use a heater or even have a garage.
In fact, before I switched to synoil, my daily drive was a VW bus
(air-cooled gasser) and I used 10w40 dino oil in that in the winter, straight 50
in the summer, or sometimes 20w50. And did that up in north MN where it was so
cold that even after you got the thing started you couldn't shift the tranny to
drive it for quite awhile until the engine heat warmed it up.
You still need oil heavy enough to provide lube when it gets heated up, and,
after all, the engine is going to be every bit as hot in January at -20F as it
is in July at 100F -- once it's up to operating temp, or at least if you've got
the proper thermostat.
