The Germans are world leaders in light weight Diesels by far.,as far as experience goes.
The first diesel (aircraft) I saw was on the Hindenburg   about 2000 HP class. In 1945  I sat on top of a flying boat powered by diesels.Vandalized it --no chance it can be repaired LOL.
Now in 2003 aircraft diesels are again certified for aircraft use.    Small enough to power small cessnas etc.
In 1952 I sat on top of 20 cylinder Aircraft diesels used in german E boats (3X20cylinder yes 60 pistons 7000Hp ) trying to fix pyrometers.Noisy little buggers.       Hagar.
