The USA market 1983 style carrier bars are designed for use with the 5
speed transmission, which is longer than the 4 speed. The entire engine
on the '83 is two inches (or so) farther to the rear of the van. This
makes the '82 hoses too short. '82 hoses will also not mate up with the
'84 coolant pipes.
To make things worse, there are:
- three different styles of coolant pipes
- three different styles of coolant expansion tanks
- three (or more) different sets of hoses
Many of the older parts are no longer available. For a 1984 van using
the common 091 4 speed transmission, I think you will be able to find
hoses at www.busdepot.com. There are additional variations on the
hose/coolant pipe/expansion tank setup in European vans, which got the
diesel engine all the way through 1992. '86 and later vans use the same
plastic coolant pipes and expansion tank as the 2.1 Waterboxer. I plan
on replacing my entire system with the Euro setup when I can afford it.
