[Vwdiesel] winter hijinks

Chris,
On my '91 Ecodiesel, you tension the alternator belt using the
tensioner pulley between the alternator and AC. You loosen the
tensioner pulley nut, then there's a bolt on the front (radiator side)
of the bracket that you turn to move the whole tensioner pulley in or
out. Not a lot of space to work, but not horrible compared to some
procedures. Make sure that the belt to the AC compressor is tight
first, as that adjustment does affect the alternator belt adjustment. I
did have to buy a size down on the alternator belt, as I ran out of
adjustment on the alternator with the stock size (is that what you were
talking about in the first place??)
That is the one pain in the rear part of this, is that if the
alt. belt breaks or is too big, you have to take the two other belts off
(power steering, AC/water pump) before you get down to the alt belt, yet
you can't check adjustment on the alt belt before you install and
tension the other two...
Chris

Small world. I live just outside of Tyler, about 2 hours east of you.
We
were spared the ice, just got a lot of rain.
My Jetta hasn't eaten any belts yet. But the Alternator belt is very
loose.
And I have no way to adjust it on top of the alternator. It appears the
only way to tighten it is to move the A/C compressor.
