I think it's pretty common. I've had *much* better luck with a true 10mm
belt as opposed to the 3/8" belt most parts store stock. The dealer has
them and I've also ordered one from www.germanautoparts.com. And, at
least on my Dad's 91 Jetta, I definitely had to retension things after the
first 50 miles. I know all the books say to check belts then but this is
the only car I've had where it's truly been necessary.
