While we are on the topics of starting issues,
something said about the possible bad starter rung a
bell that could be my issue.

Ever since I installed by 1.9 NA with is a 1.9 NA
short block with a 1.6 NA or not hydralic head with
all 1.6 NA stuff from my origonal engine.
I am using new 1.9 vacume pump and new 1.9 injectors.

I had 2 different knowledgable VW mechanics help me
install timing belt and setup stroke, both said this
motor is TIGHT when cranking.
My issue is the motor does strain some when Cold Crank
but starts first bang with glow and mild temps. Takes
3 or 4 rotations to start when below 25 F, but I think
I have a bad glow.
OK

The strange thing is when a diesel motor is up to temp
and hot, I of course get no glow because of the
coolant temp sensor, but it will take up to 6 or 7
rotations to start, 2 rotations if I pull the cold
start advance.
If I pull the wire to the temp sensor so I always get
glow, bang, 1/2 turn start everytime.

1.
So, if I run this way with temp sensor wire off, will
my glows be on ALL THE TIME?

2.
When the temp sensor wire is on and it is cold out, I
only get about 3-4 seconds of glow light, not long
enough for COLD starting. If I pull the wire to the
temp sensor, I get full 10 seconds of glow. When I
run my son to daycare a mile away, shut down and go to
restart, temp sensor says the coolant is hot enough
and I get NO glow, but I need it here. I have
replaced the glow relay, should I also replace the
sensor in the coolant line?

3. Is it possible that my hot start issue is because
the motor is not turning FAST enough and that is why
timing advance gets the motor started with less
rotations? Battery is class 41, little over a year
old. I am still using the 1.6 starter, it is a
re-build from about 6 years ago. Maybe time for new
starter as well?

When the motor is running, it is stronge and constant
on temps and oil pressure.

I figured I could perplex you all with this on.

Thanks, Bryan Belman
