  The glow plugs actually stay on until you hear the relay click.  This is a
little longer than the longest the light stays on.  You can simply turn on
the key, wait and then start, with or without paying attention to the light.

  Possible but with pulling the cold start knob assisting a warm engine,
it sounds like your timing is retarded a bit.  A wild guess would be
almost .010mm.

  Sounds like timing.  If the GP cycle is way short on a slightly warm
engine then it could be a bad sensor as well.
