If you are here in this forum , good chance you are a Tinkerer or Inventor or in need of Wheels (like me).
IF you have suffered from brownouts (LA?) or long interruption of Electric Power , you know what I am getting at.
For a house is a 1,5LNA VW diesel (from wreckers) a good choice ??? ---excellent idea.
Even if you have to pay say a couple of thousand dollars for an alternator -- it still makes sense.
Get 2 pole alternator for direct drive 3600RPM 60 Hz.   For belt drive get 4 pole machine.Then timing belts and sprockets will work  --they are 2 to one ratio.  For short time use those belts will transmit an enormous amount of power.I made Gensets using single bicycle chain and sprocket (racing bike parts) worked like the dickens.Powered by Landrover 2.25 liter gasjob.
Forget about fancy Alternators with shaftmounted "BRUSHLESS"  exciters (not needed for standby units) they are expensive. Get the ones with a dc generator on the shaft or the ones with sliprings 2 rings.
Remember number of poles and RPM determines frequency --2 = 3600RPM    4 =1800   8 = 900 RPM. etc. Who made the first ALUMINIUM ? and who discovered Magnetic INDUCTION ? same man , H.C.Ørsted in my home town.Copenhagen Denmark . The Vikings were swine's just the same , let me apologize for their swinery.
I may add that I never made one with a VW diesel , if I was going to I would weld or bolt 2 or 3 flywheels together and use a Isospeedic governor.I have one on an old landrover.
Forget about making money selling power to the Utility , forget about Squirrelcage AC motors.
For those of you who wants to make a carbon neutral Power unit I have my pride and joy unit for North American use only ---will explain some other time ,IT uses carbon monoxide for power.   Hagar.
