I would also be concerned about the longevity of your water pump. I've
heard that a proper coolant mixture helps prolong the life of the seals and
lubricates the pump. Two summers ago, my Jetta lost most of the coolant
several times while my wife was driving, due to a cracked sensor in the
tank. I fixed the sensor, but had no extra coolant, so it was straight water
in the system. I forgot to correct this for a few months, when I was met
with a sudden water pump bearing failure. It was then that I recalled
hearing that coolant is good for the pump and/or seals. The pump in
question was only about 2 years/40k kms old. The previous water pump
had gone well over 250k kms before it failed. Coincidence? Perhaps, but
changing these waterpumps is not my favourite task, so I'd rather play it
safe, and get the extra corrsion protection/boiling temp increase, etc.
