[Vwdiesel] A2 strut bearing upgrades?

I just finished swapping my Spax front struts from my old '85 Jetta TD to
my new one, and noticed the strut bearings are worn out, so they now
cause knocking noises over bumps, and can be detected when bouncing
the front end. I got a fair life out of these ones (around 100k kms, maybe
more), but I'd still rather not have to replace them for a long time, as
compressing springs is not my favourite pastime...
Have any of you tried the A3 style strut bearing upgrade sold be RPI and
others? Or are there other solutions to improve the life of the bearings? It
amazes me that the rubber outlasts the crappy bearings they put in these
things.
