[Vwdiesel] A Diesel Beemer?

On the way to work this morning I saw a BMW that had
an insignia on the trunk lid that read "524 td" (the
"TD" was in lower case letters). I was dierectly
behind it, but saw absolutely no smoke on
acceleration, and could not really hear the motor. The
BMW was at least a 1986 (had the center brake light
required by NHTSA on '86 and later MYs), and was a
small Beemer, about the size of my Jetta. Nice shape,
too. I was aware BMW sold the newer and larger TDs
here with the same engine that occasionally found its
way into a Lincoln. I was not aware of any others,
though. Was it a diesel?
