The A3 shifter is a direct fit on the A2 - no mifications are necessary.
I have one on my 87 Jetta winter beater.

Best bet is to try to find a donor GLI/GTI/GTX.  You need calipers,
carriers, backing plates, stub axles, pads, rotors & bearings, new brake
cables.  Bear in mind that although the rear disk upgrade has a high
coolness factor, the rear calipers are prone to siezing up, especially in
winter climates with salt/rust.
