I don't see where you come up with that. They're just small heating
elements
in a shell. Like a big water heater element.

The control element, IMO is the heating element. "Control" likely refers
to "controlling the temperature." Just a heating element. They're not
terribly consistent. I've seen them where the whole end gets orange, just
the tip, a spot in the middle or a spot to the side. The last two are
usually
close to failure, certainly the last one. The GAP is simply the space
between
the housing and the heating unit. The housing is soft and part of a taper
seal.
Tighten it too much and you'll close the gap. Close it too much and you'll
crush the body of the element which will destroy it.
Nothing fancy that I can see. If it works, and you don't/haven't
overtightened
them, then they're good.
