I've used a non-metric one with success before.

What this means is to pick a reference point that is non-zero on the gauge, because
you are searching for a "bump", so the gauge will move above and below zero as you
adjust, so you will lose contact with the plunger if you choose zero as the reference
(when it goes below zero). In other words, anything >0 will work, as you are
measuring the displacement from one point (the reference "zero" point) to another.

Hope this makes sense - it's been a few years since I've done this, so I'm going from
memory.
