[Vwdiesel] Mileage: NA vs TD?

For those of you who've driven both NA & TD engines in similar vehicles,
how have you found the mileage to compare?

The first tank on my new '85 Jetta with 1.6NA was not quite what I hoped
for: 782km on 45.8 liters of fuel = 5.86 l/100km, or 48.2 mpg IMP, 40.1
mpg US.

Although I had not kept precise records on my other '85 Jetta with 1.6TD, I
normally got 900+ kms on a tank of ~ 45-50l, which is at least 2mpg
better. (same trans on both cars).

I'm hoping this first tank is skewed because the gas station guy "topped it
off" (my wife filled it, but I've told her to ask them not to top it off...), so I'll
have to see if the mileage improves once that habit stops.

Just curious what others have experienced between the two engines.
