[Vwdiesel] where is neutral?

greetings all:

i had my shift mechanism apart to change bushings and the like. my problem is
getting the shifter re-aligned.
i made register marks on the rod and clamp, but as i could not engage 5th
before. i was hoping that it was shifter mis-aligment and not a toasted 5th
gear.

i am thinking of making a wooden plug out of plywood, the size of the shifter
well in the console and putting a hole the size fo the shifter rod in the center
to hold the shifter in the right place so i can tighten the clamp on the rod
underneath to locate it properly.

is center of the shifter throw neutral? bently shows a special tool (of course).
