the car is grounded pending further investigation, esp. the crankshaft
pulley! Whatever, this doesn't seem to be heading far an easy & low-cost fix!

I had a 93 TD passat in here last fall with "impossible to time" syndrome,
had finaly pounded the piston tops with the valves, and bent valves and
broke lifters.

Twits had removed the C-shaft center bolt and pulled the whole
sprocket/pulley ass'y, and screwed up the key when replacing it. What a mess!

If the T-belt was changed by idiots, they might have removed the crankshaft
center bolt, and not got it back on properly on the funny keyway.

DO NOT remove the center bolt (even if you could :-)
The 4 hex socket bolts that hold the pulleys onto the timing sprocket need
to be removed, and the pulleys will come right off, exposing the sprocket,
not disturbing the mating of the sprocket and key on the C-shaft and
permitting removal of the plastic lower belt shroud. Now the belt is easily
changed.
