Most definately the sway bar bushing, they are just like the strut mounts on
the older cars, always noisy from day one. It is where the bar is mounted to
the frame, there were two types of bushings, soft and hard, some cars got the
noisy ones, others the good ones, all replacement ones are good. Cost is low
($20?) but replacement is NOT easy (not hard just really painful so I have
seen). I have a 2000 with no noise (90k miles) and an 01 (40k miles) with the
noisy, funny....
The new cars are also really picky with wheel balancing, the steering wheel
will vibrate if the wheels are out the smallest amount (not like the old
cars!)

The car is overall EC, except for: The Mysterious Thump. The MT comes from the
passenger front corner, occurs when I hit a small/moderate bump. Sounds like a
ball joint ( though less frequent) or a loose strut mount, though VW dealer
claims all is well with the front end, and can offer no constructive advice (
big surprise ) other than " wait 'till it gits worse and bring it back in "
.Seller will pay what it takes to fix The Thump, but what to fix ?? Any ideas
would be appreciated !!
Sincerely,
Bill Kelly
