3-Pin is for 2-speed fans (All TD models and models w/
A/C, I believe, and I guess the Vanagons). On 2-speed
models, the high fan speed gets power through a relay
(A 50 amp relay screwed to the fan shroud), the low
speed does not. One other thing to check if the "High"
speed does not work, 2-Pin thermoswitch is for single
speed cooling fans.
I lost all my R-12 once because the fan relay failed
(an aftermarket one made in China) and the cooling fan
did not kick on "High" one hot summer day when I
turned on the A/C. What a sight to see and one hell of
a noise, 2 lbs of hot R-12 venting into the atmosphere
in about 3 seconds. The safety plug in the bottom of
the receiver/drier melted and blew. The new
receiver/driers do not have the vent plug! Melted my
fuse block also. Stay away from those cheap
imitations.
