Forrest,
Like others have said, #1 at TDC, Cam verified with lock bar. AND...
Injection pump: There is a notch in the face of the pulley. There is a
notch in the pump mount plate. There is a pointer of sorts on the front
snout of the pump case. Line all of these up and you should damned
close. When I swapped pumps on my old Quantum TD, I forgot to roll the
pump back to line them up. It will be about 90* off at rest.
Now, install timing gauge. Roll the engine by hand until the gauge is at
a minimum reading. Set your gauge face to "zero". Turn the engine back
to TDC, #1 or #3, it doesn't matter. Rotate pump body accordingly to
achieve desired timing.
