and I can assure you there is no difference in how the
two pointers are removed, since I swapped one in from
an '89 after I screwed up the speedo in my '85, and
ended up disassembling the '89 one to "roll the
mileage up" to match my old odometer (is it a crime to
increase the mileage?, I wonder). The speedo from the
'89 was out of a gas jetta, BTW. Its identical, except
that the dynamic low oil pressure warning circuit
board has to be swapped out from your old diesel
speedo when the gas one is put into your diesel
cluster.

1. Gently lift up on the END of the pointer and move
it over and to the left of its stop peg.

2. Mark w/ a pencile on the dial face where the
pointer rests while the speedometer is level (face
horizontal w/ table). This is to set the needle
correctly when putting back together.

Gently pull directly "UP" while grasping the pointer
w/ thumb and first two fingers (its brittle, I broke
the first one)

Re-assembly is opposite of removal.

Then the return spring has to come off the needle
(pointer) shaft. I think I used needle nose pliers to
slip it off w/ out bending.

About that gear: Slip it off its steel shaft and knurl
the shaft by bitting it a few times w/ cross cutters
where the gear fits. Slip the gear back on. I think I
had to remove ALL the numbered gear wheels to get to
it, but you'll get the hang of it. That may be the
only fix you need! Othertimes the gear splits, and you
now have a spare odometer to get parts from.

Hope this helps.
