I had this happen, due to a corroded coolant passage in the head, the undermined the head gasket and allowed a small leak between the cylinder and cooling system.  No oil/coolant mixing, but would get the cooling system pressurizing, enough so that the
pressure cap would blow, causing coolant loss followed by overheating (due to the lowered coolant level).
