The reason I got involved in discussion is straight forward.
Is the VW diesels a good choice for a stand-by set ???
my answer --- yes indeed. Now for the choice of alternator
or generator if you like, is more of a problem. I hope to save
some of you from sending money to sites who promise to
let you know how to use washing machine motors etc.
The waters got muddy with names like "Induction Generator"
used by Major Wind power companies. AC motors come in many shapes
like wound rotor --squirrel cage and so on. To find a cheap surplus
motor of about 20 hp look around -- in America brand new 50 cycle are
abounds ---and in Europe -- 60 cycle are to be found. Remember that
frequency is set by rpm. So either will work.
But for those of you who are a little shaky on electrical --- go for a real
alternator , one designed for 240/120v in america and 380/220 in most
parts of erope. Any generator with a nameplate Voltage higher than you
need can be used, voltage regulator sets the voltage . Now for the rest
of you who dreams of money rolling in from Net metering etc I really enjoy
hearing your stories. Its a jungle out there so be careful. Remember the
"Magnet Motor" ??? and the free electricity thingy ???--scams. It is a
rainy day here so I took a trip to the archive --- was lots of fun.
Hagar.
PS: I know of no generators of house power , that does not use induction ---save for permanent magnet mashines
and fuel cells ---everything other than the old proven types is too expensive for a lot of us.
