Nate, The easy way to tell is that it's almost always the outer (go with
the odds)...  An even easier way to deal with it is that an entire NAPA
rebuilt drive shaft with lifetime warranty is $30 less than one new CV
joint.  So I've just replaced the shaft and never worried about which
one it was.
