I have noticed that as well in my work travel around
the US.

I have traveled enough to know the I see the MOST
VW's, both old and new, in the North East corner of
USA, it seems to me.

Many in the North West and Southern CA I bet, but not
much in-between.

I was working in TX for about 3 months and could count
the number of VW I saw on 2 hands.  I was floored to
see a silver beat-up vanagon on day near Round Rock,
TX.
