[Vwdiesel] A2 shock recommendations?

I've tried tightening a few times now - the first time they were definitely 
loose - I was able to tighten several a half turn or more, and the noise did 
go away for a day or two (at least my wife says, I didn't drive it). Since 
then, they've been tight each time, yet the noise is back. I'm concerned 
that a piece of the gasket may have blown out so it no longer seals, not 
sure how how likely this is though. I mostly want to find the noise and fix it 
so I know it's not something more serious like valves...
