Anyone have any explanations/thoughts/comments? Any similar experiences?
I would have thought- gunked case=crappy parts/clean case=good parts. HMMM.
Andrew

IMHO IMHO The 81 was run on Synthetic lube and the 73 was run on good
old Dino.

Yes lots of us Geezers have experienced exactly that many times. When "DETERGENT"
oils first became popular. ( advertising) engine manufacturers sent out a lot of letters
saying ----do not use detergent oil. Lots of failures like the one above was being reported.

Look at any shelf ---- what do you see ??? things like " Super detergent" High detergent
implying that ----- it is good for the engine. The word "clean" sells a lot of gasoline and oil
to women. The best lube for one engine here is 30 SAE straight mineral oil.

Not multigrade not detergent ---single grade 30 non detergent. The 15W40 I use
in the Rabbit is a compromise. -- Not best lube ---but best all around. (cold starts is
the reason).

Like Val Christian pointed out it is part "ART" to find the right combination.

For those of you who are seriously interested (like me) I suggest you read the oil
testing program done in New York on taxicabs. What is good for a steady running
genset may be no good for a stop and go stop and go Rabbit on the Wet Coast.

We were asked about moisture being a problem in Rabbits that sleeps a lot --
moisture building up in oil. Here is one answer --use a corrosion preventive.

I use Rust - Ban 632 (Esso). 1 part 632 to 3 parts oil by volume.

There were days this winter when my blotter test showed water in oil --- it
is now gone . Things are very dry here now. Love those Printer papers.

So there you go IMHO would you rather have a perfect filthy crank or
a worn out Mister Clean ???---- To me draining oil is a piece of cake.

I do not need extended intervals. (bad idea) However I do recognize your
problem if you live in a housing complex in New York. --- There you need to
be a Real Rodin.

A generation ago when I was high and mighty ---(before IRS) I owned a Paper Cup
Piper J - 3 65 HP continental. Filthy case perfect Crank. Then I got a clean case
65 continental Clean as a whistle ---worn out. (detergent oil)

I got many stories like that. ---------- maybe some day I shall graduate as an "Artiste"

Hagar.
