[Vwdiesel] TDC for Chuck

well, i have to disagree with a little here. after i
rebuilt my first engine in a vw vanagon i couldn't
find the timing mark on the injection pump sprocket so
i just marked it with a scribe when the crank mark was
where it was supposed to be. i forgot that it could be
a half turn off or right on. murphy's law i was half
turn off. (probably also why i couldn't find the mark.
i didn't know what to look for - had never had to find
one before.)
that engine started to run after only about 3 seconds
of cranking! (from having the whole fuel system apart
and a brand new engine. i still can't believe it 10
years later.) it ran smoothly and kept running. but it
smoked white like crazy. i didn't know any better and
figured maybe it was assembly lube and would go away
once the engine got broken in. car had NO power. but
it ran. once i found my problem many days and many
many hours troubleshooting later i was pretty
embarrased, but had a good running vw.
these darn things are EXTREMELY forgiving, in my
experience! so just cause it's off time is no reason
to think that it won't run. i think mine was about as
bad as possible, other than just shooting the fuel in
at the bottom of the exhaust stroke.
