There's a good truck diesel shop here in Columbus, who has rebuilt
the VE pumps in the past. They tell me the main thing that goes out
is the 'bearing surface' of the pump body where the drive shaft
enters the pump. This is the shaft with the toothed pulley on the
outside and the rotary vane pump on the inside. When this unbushed
closely fitted 'hole' in the pump body wears then the rotary vane
pump sucks air and loses prime. How many times have we all seen
this happen? The big cause is getting the toothed belt too tight.
The shop is Columbus Diesel, 614-445-8391.
I've got a couple old pumps on the back of a workbench, probably
best used for core purposes.
I've also got a Bosch injector tester, which is what you need if you
are checking or rebuilding injectors.
I don't have a VW diesel at the moment, but I've had a number back
through the years. I do have two VW turbo setups on the shelf, if
I can find all the parts. One is a bolt on kit featuring an IHI turbo.
The other is a take off from about an '85 or '86 Jetta TD.
The thing that may turn into a project is the 2.0L I5 Audi diesel
in the corner of the garage. With a turbo, that would be splendid
in something like an Audi 4000 Quattro. I came up with it when I had
an '86 5000 CS Turbo Quattro, with the idea that when the gas engine gave
up I'd swap in the diesel. Shesh. That car had 200,000 miles on it when
I sold it and it was still running fine even though I'd been running twice
the factory bost levels. It's always a candidate for my '95 Audi S6,
although even running 24 PSI boost it will probably last a loong time.

Get a copy of the book if you can find one. In the front of mine, it
says that this book was distributed by:
SAE Society of Automotive Engineers
400 Commonwealth Drive
Warrendale, PA 15096
This s a paperback book of 200 pages, about 6.5" x 9" with a green cover.

heh. The harlequin Great Dane thinks she's a lap dog. She was entirely
in my lap the other night, which makes it very difficult to get up!
