Hagar, you are such a kind soul!  Andrew, you might also try some Goop
hand cleaner, the creamy stuff without any grit.  It sure does refresh
old rubber seals!

Andrew I did a test for you ---- it works . It does seem to remove a
thin skin of
paint.

It would be of no harm here ---- it reminds me of using rubbing compound
years ago.
