[Vwdiesel] Alternator Question

I am replacing the alternator on my 81 rabbit diesel. 
Was thinking of getting a "w" terminal alternator so I
could set up a tach.  Is there any differences in
pulley diameters on the different versions of the 1.6
diesel?  What years and models had this alternator?
