Andrew,
Yes, any turbo, gas or diesel, should be given a time to cool down after
a "high boost" run. A minute or so of no-boost is usually sufficient.
It takes me just over a minute or so to meander to my house from the
nearest major cross-street. I usually just putter home upon entering my
neighborhood.
I had an '85 Quantum TD when I lived in San Diego. The drive home after
work consisted of a 20 minute blast on the freeway, then a mile from the
freeway to my house. I had a EGT gauge in the Q. I was pretty amazed on
how fast exhaust temps drop after achieving zero-boost.(pre-turbo)
In other words, I was pretty confident that my turbo was at "idle" temp
by the time I got home. No worries!
